Lupron Depot (leuprolide acetate) and Advanced Prostate Cancer

The hormone testosterone stimulates hormone-dependent prostate cancer. As long as the body produces testosterone, prostate cancer can continue to spread. Decreasing the body's supply of testosterone can slow the growth of cancerous cells. In the treatment of advanced prostate cancer, hormonal therapy is used to alleviate associated symptoms. Individual results may vary.

Lower Testosterone Levels

Lupron Depot shuts down the production of testosterone by the testicles. This deprives hormone-dependent prostate cancer cells of the fuel (ie, testosterone) they need to grow. Individual results may vary. In many cases, Lupron Depot can relieve some of the symptoms associated with advanced prostate cancer.

The Possibility of Reversible Side Effects

As a treatment to relieve symptoms for advanced prostate cancer, Lupron Depot is similar to surgical castration in reducing testosterone to castrate levels. Unlike the surgical procedure, the effect of Lupron Depot on testosterone levels is reversible when treatment is stopped.

Convenience

Treatment with Lupron Depot -4 Month 30 mg means only three office visits per year for injections. Fewer visits to the doctor for injections saves time, and could mean less out-of-pocket expense for you. Even though you may have 4 months between visits, Lupron Depot works continuously and consistently over the time between injections.

Insurance Coverage

Most private insurers and Medicare will cover appropriate claims for Lupron Depot. Check with Medicare or your health insurance provider to verify coverage amounts and any out-of-pocket expense.

TAP Patient Assistance Program

TAP Pharmaceutical Products Inc., the company that distributes Lupron Depot, also provides a Lupron Patient Assistance Program (LPAP) to help qualified patients, based on income, obtain Lupron Depot through their doctor.

LPAP is a service that:
  • Reviews qualification criteria to determine your eligibility
  • Ships Lupron Depot to your doctor's office if you are eligible

Talk to your doctor about your eligibility status.
