Prostate Cancer Treatment and Lupron Depot (leuprolide acetate)

If you or someone you care for has reached a stage of prostate cancer at which prostatectomy or radiation therapy was not successful in curing the cancer, or is not likely to be effective, you need to know that there are still options.

Lupron Depot is used to help relieve the symptoms of advanced prostate cancer, such as bone pain and difficulty urinating. Lupron Depot can slow the growth of cancerous cells. Individual results may vary. Lupron Depot is not a cure for prostate cancer.

Lupron Depot is the most prescribed* drug in a class of drugs known as luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone agonists, also called LH-RH agonists. In fact, Lupron Depot has been used since 1989 for the treatment of symptoms related to advanced prostate cancer.

Lupron Depot shuts down the production of testosterone by the testicles. This deprives hormone-dependent prostate cancer cells of the fuel (ie, testosterone) they need to grow. Individual results may vary. Decreasing the amount of testosterone in the body can result in a reduction of symptoms related to advanced prostate cancer.

Patients with advanced prostate cancer who are considering treatment with hormonal therapy should be aware of the potential benefits of starting immediate treatment with hormonal therapy, rather than waiting. Study results from 934 patients with advanced prostate cancer showed that the risk of serious complications decreases with early hormonal therapy. Patients who received immediate hormonal treatment experienced fewer bone fractures, spinal cord compressions, and urinary blockages, and the cancer was less likely to spread to non-bony tissues.
